SUAG June 2021 Newsletter

Southern Utah Art Guild is a non-profit organization. Board meetings are open to all members as well as the community. Board meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend but not participate in the business meeting. There is opportunity after the business meeting concludes to have round table discussions.

SUAG Membership

SUAG membership dues will now be on a "Calendar" yearly scheduled payment will be due January 1st of every year. If someone signs up in June their dues will still need to renew the following January. SUAG has one of the least expensive yearly fees of any art guild and has so much to offer its members for the $35.00 yearly fee.

Lyn Boyer "No Fear Art" Workshop

You don’t want to miss this workshop at Arrowhead Gallery in St. George, Utah with award-winning artist Lyn Boyer of Durango, Colorado.

Thursday, Nov. 11-Saturday November 13, Boyer presents her three-day “No Fear Painting" workshop. The cost for the workshop is $575. SUAG members may sign up at the reduced price of $375. Contact Arrowhead Gallery’s office at 435-628-9592 from 11 am-2 pm, Tuesday thru Saturday to reserve a space in the workshop with a $75 non-refundable deposit. Remaining balance due on or before Tuesday, November 9.

The workshop consists of a demonstration/lecture by Lyn each morning, followed by participants painting in the afternoons. Lyn will also paint in the afternoons and circulate amongst participants for individual comment/instruction. Participants are encouraged to paint in their medium of choice, including oils, watercolor, acrylics or pastels.

The workshop will be limited to 15 participants, so early enrollment is encouraged as the workshop is expected to sell out. For more information, contact the SUAG Program Director, Kyle Denning at 760-822-5877 or [email protected]

Congratulations to Kyle Denning, Tina Stergios and Gary Alba for selling at this show.

Our next SUAG Art Show at the Red Cliff Gallery is June 18-July 29. New Gallery open hours are M-F 10am-5pm and Sat 2:15-4:15pm. Assistant will be at the gallery M-Sat 2:15-4:15pm to help make sales. The theme for the show is "Only Abstraction." Up to 3 pieces of artwork may be submitted.

Award money for 2021 has been increased in all categories. The dollar award allocation is as follows:

Best of Show - $150

1st Place - $75 each Category

2nd Place - $50 each Category

3rd Place - $35 each Category

8 Honorable Mentions – (4 for painting, 2 each for photography and 3D) $15 each Category

 St. George Weaving Studio Workshops

Opportunity to experience creativity on the floor loom. WEAVING, making cloth, a technology from the earliest human civilization to looms of the early pioneers often roughhewn from local timber to the punched card Jacquard loom which was the first computer.

Four Day Workshop to be offered at The St. George Weaving Studio

Located at 400 South Donlee Drive in St. George, UT.

Time: 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Date: July 1, 2, 3, & 5 – 2021 Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Monday

Cost: $50 – materials included.

Enroll: To sign up for this Workshop, secure your place, and reserve a loom, please call or text Sandra at 435 272 6055. Name and contact information required. Payment can be made at beginning of Workshop using either cash or valid check.

Take Away: Knowledge about various weaving skills; including warp planning, preparation, dressing loom, techniques; double weave & leno weave, producing a useable project which may include one or some of the following: Designer wall hanging, mug rugs, table runner, scarf or other iems.

Studio will be open for ART to ZION visitors between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. –See weaving in action-sign up to Weave a Rug – see contact above. $50.00 and 4 hours of your time.

The Southern Utah Art Guild is proud to present its “Portals and Pathways” art show that will run from May 7 through June 3 in the Red Cliff Gallery.

 

The show features 83 works of art from 35 southern Utah artists. The show consists of contemporary art from all mediums including all forms of painting, mixed media, photography, pottery, and sculpture.

 

The show is open from 10 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday.

 

The Red Cliff Gallery is located in the St. George City Commons Building, 220 N 200 E, in St. George.

The judges for the show were Dr. Lauren DiSalvo and David West:

 

Dr. Lauren DiSalvo is an Assistant Professor at DSU where she teaches art history in the art department. An archaeologist turned art historian, her interests lay at the intersections of these two disciplines in the field of classical reception. She has published and presented on topics of classical reception including plaster casts used at world’s fairs in the 20th century, souvenirs associated with Rome and the Grand Tour in the 18th and 19th centuries, and portraiture of women in the 18th and 19th centuries that was inspired by Roman wall painting.

 

David J. West’s father was a photographer and David gives his father credit for instilling in him his passion for photography. After studying photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, David traveled the world. His passion is landscape photography. The David J. West Gallery opened in 2007 in Springdale. Through David's love and dedication to his art, his images have become fine pieces of art that are collected all over the world; with each image uniquely conveying an emotion of their own.

The Southern Utah Art Guild is proud to present its “Capturing the Light” art show that will run from January 17 through March 5 in the Red Cliff Gallery.

 

The show features 143 works of art from 61 Southern Utah Artists. The show consists of contemporary art from all mediums including all forms of painting and mixed media, photography, pottery, sculpture and other.

The judges for the show were Glen Blakley and McGarren Flack:

 

Glen is an art professor and has taught at Dixie State University for 43 years. He has an MFA in Design and Ceramics from BYU. Glen’s accomplishments include that he was the first Director of the St. George (SG) Art Museum and for the SG Art Festival, a Member of the SG Arts Council, President of the SW Utah Arts Council, Board Member of Year of American Crafts in Utah, Board Member of the Utah Visual Arts Committee, Director at Large and Official Photographer for the National Council for Education in Ceramic Arts, Board Member of the National Writers Conference, Task Force Member of the SUWAC National Endowment Grant, Juror for the Junior SG Arts Festival, and Board Member for the SW Utah Film Commission. He is author of many national and international publications. He has won many art awards during his career with most recent award for the DSU Sears Art Gallery Service Award and the DSU Excellence in Teaching Award.

 

McGarren Flack was introduced to art at Utah Valley University and reached artistic maturity after painting for three years. He started painting in the fall of 2002 at Brigham Young University in the Illustration program. After graduating from BYU in 2005 Flack was accepted into the Masters of Fine Art program at the University of Utah and graduated April 2008. Currently, he is a full time painter and professor for Dixie State University. Flack's professional interest in art started when he saw the John Singer Sargent traveling art show in Washington D.C. He was captivated with the ability Sargent had in producing a scene that came alive and at the same time painted Brava brushstrokes. Flack's inspirations are mostly twentieth century artists like Ander Zorn, John Singer Sargent, JW Waterhouse, Carl Bloch, and P.S. Kroyer. You can view his art at: www.flackstudio.com

Susan Bingham along with her husband, Paul, is a collector, art dealer, gallery owner, artist and co- founder of the Thunderbird Foundation for the Arts founded in 2001 in order to preserve, restore and place on the National Register of Historic places the home and property of famed American artist Maynard Dixon. The couple have been dealers in Dixon’s work for 40 years working directly with Dixon’s widow Edith Hamlin Dixon. They represent well known American contemporary artists at the Thunderbird Foundation Gallery which is adjacent to the Dixon property in Mt. Carmel, Utah.

 

Van Mangus currently works in the Art Department at Dixie State University. He is the advisor for the Visual Arts and teaches classes ranging from Introduction to the Arts to Artistic Website Design. Although he utilizes multiple mediums regarding his art, he specializes in watercolor and ink. He believes that all individuals have the talent to express themselves through creative art forms and cultivates this expression within his art students.

The Southern Utah Art Guild is proud to present its Fall Art Show that will run from September 6 through October 31 in the Red Cliff Gallery. The theme of the show is “Color Explosion”.


The show features 171 works of art from 68 Southern Utah artists. The show consists of contemporary art from all mediums including all forms of painting and mixed media, photography, pottery, sculpture and other. All the art is for sale.


The show is open from 10 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday.

The judges for the show were Kathy Cieslewicz and Molly Keller:


Kathy Cieslewicz is Director and Curator for Dixie State University Art Museum. She received her Bachelor degree from Southern Utah University. Her paintings and prints have been exhibited throughout the U.S. She presents at workshops, presents art demonstrations, mentors, adjudicates art shows, and speaks to community organizations. She is an adjunct instructor at DSU and an Art Instructor at Mohave Community College. She is Founder, Presenter, and Director for “The Business of Art and Women Out West professional artists of Utah.”


Molly Keller is an Adjunct Professor of Art at DSU. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration from BYU. She likes to paint with oils and specializes in paintings of children. She has interned for numerous world-renown painting masters such as Burton Silverman in NYC. She has become an accomplished portrait artist receiving awards in the International Portrait Competition, the Portrait Society of American and has been in many other salons and galleries such as DSU, BYU, and the Springville Museum of Art.

The Red Cliff Gallery is proud to present its Summer Art Show that will run from June 21 through August 29 in the Red Cliff Gallery. The theme of the show is “Only Abstraction”.

The show features 231 works of art from 63 Southern Utah Artists. The show consists of contemporary art from all mediums including all forms of painting and mixed media, photography, pottery, sculpture and other. All the art is for sale.

The show is open from 10 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday.

The Red Cliff Gallery is located in the St. George City Commons Building, 220 N 200E, in St. George.

The judges for the show were Daniel Thornton and Zuleica Thornton. Dan is a painter, author, and teacher of creative art. His paintings are also reflective of impressionism and realism. Zuleica paints Italian scenery working in acrylics and oils, painting depictions of Italian countryside and community life.

"Spring" Show Winners Announced

Attached are the results from the current Red Cliff show titled "Spring".


The show consists of 166 pieces from 63 artists - a record number of participants.

 

The show is partnered with a show from the organization Memory Matters, a Dementia and Alhizimers support group. 34 paintings are in that show.

The Southern Utah Art Guild is proud to present its Winter Art Show that will run through January 24th in the Red Cliff gallery. The theme of the show is “Color of Winter”.

The show is open from 10 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday.

The show will also be open during the Arts to Zion Studio Tour, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday, January 17th, 18th, 19th and 21st. Selected artists will be working in the gallery and will have additional works for sale.
