Marilyn Rose | an Arrowhead Gallery Artist

Marilyn Rose
Fine Artist

I embarked on my serious study of art in 1992, studying with dozens of renowned artists
through classes, workshops, books and videos, and I never stop learning and growing and
honing my skills. The things I love to paint are widely varied: beautiful places, interesting
people and meaningful things – I paint them all with the idea of portraying a mood or
emotion rather than merely describing facts. My technique reflects the subject and what
I’m seeing and feeling at the time. My process is flexible, painting from life when possible,
from my video for moving subjects and from memory, and my own
photographic references.
Regardless of subject matter, approach or technique, my underlying mission is always the
emergence from darkness into light, the journey from the earthly to the spiritual,
reflecting our human experience. I love the challenge of recreating a mood with beautiful
pieces of paint. My mission is to watch this magic happen and share the joy it brings me as
well as to the viewers.
I live in St. George with my husband of over 50 years and enjoy occasional visits and
frequent calls with our two daughters and five grandchildren. I love helping others find
their artistic voices and be the best artists they can be. I teach a weekly oil painting class
where we explore not only fine art principles and techniques but also how to let go of
judgment and to paint with joy. I am active in our local art community and I love to create
monthly opportunities for plein air painting get-togethers where we share tips and enjoy
the companionship.
More than 500 of my paintings are in private collections across the United States and in
the U.K. I am a signature member of the American Impressionist Society and a member of
the California Art Club and Oil Painters of America. I have had several one-artist shows and
have participated in dozens of gallery shows in California, southern Utah and across the
U.S. as well as being juried into several national shows.
My motto is “Shine Your Light” and my favorite quote is from the poem “My Brilliant
Image” by Hafiz: “I wish I could show you when you are lonely and in darkness the
astonishing light of your own being!”
field studies,
As a plein air painter since 1996, I learned to create a composition quickly and capture the
essence of a scene with joyful brushwork and palette knife. I get outdoors regularly to do
small paintings that may be used for larger studio pieces, but often they stand on their
own. I love the peace and comfort of being in the rural lands where life is simple and real.
