John Paul Bischoff | an Arrowhead Gallery Artist
I only began painting recently, but I have been around art my entire life. My father was an artist, primarily known for his murals and other public artwork. I was a student of art, but only in terms of its history. My professional life was spent in academia as a historian of the Middle Ages. I am completely untrained as an artist—never having taken courses or received lessons. I am therefore, in a constant process of experimentation and discovery.
I attempt to create images of people, places, and things that invoke an emotional response on the part of the viewer. Most of the scenes that appear in my work are reminiscent of times and localesI have known. Many of my works reflect my own experiences and the things that have moved me. I spent most of my early life in South Jersey—a unique cultural microcosm on the east coast. I also spent twenty-seven years in Oklahoma, another specific culture. During my college years I lived for a time in England, and it continues to stir strong memories. I spent my grad school years in New England and returned there after retiring in Oklahoma. Finally, I moved after retirement from academia to the desert. You see echoes of these locales and their history in all my works.
I currently paint in oils featuring subjects in landscape, figural studies, and portraiture.
