Don Tate | an Arrowhead Gallery Artist

I was born in the small mining town of McGill, Nevada, in 1942, completing my elementary and high school education McGill and Ely. A year after graduating from high school, I attended Dixie Jr. College and graduated with the Class of 1963.
Perhaps my first experience wanting to draw was when I was a very little boy and wanted to be able to draw what most kids wanted to draw… the Disney characters and pictures of animals. I was also attracted to drawing American aircraft because of both WWII and the Korean War. It was always important to be to be able to draw accurately and make my drawings look just like what I was really seeing. After Dixie, I left for an LDS mission to New Zealand from 1963-65. In the back of my mind, being able to draw or paint remained throughout my adult years. The feeling of being able to become an artist never left my imagination and, although I had virtually no training in my early school years, I was able to go to Brigham Young University and graduate with a minor in art. I left for California for several years and then was transferred to Texas for the remainder of my work life. I was fortunate to have been able to continue my education at the University of Redlands and California State University of Los Angeles.
I learned calligraphy over forty years ago and quickly began teaching classes throughout Texas where I lived as well as being invited to teach in Florida, Illinois, Kansas, and other locations. Although I was a professional at teaching calligraphy, I also learned to engrave glass using hand-held instruments. I travelled to Utah, California, Idaho, and Texas and engraved high quality fragrance bottles for major department stores in these locations. In addition, I engraved animals, scenes, florals, etc. during those twenty plus years. I was a member of the International Association of Master Penmen and Teachers of Handwriting organization (IAMPETH) and received distinctive honors for my contribution to this group. I currently am a member of Southern Utah Art Guild with my primary residence in Draper, UT.
I taught calligraphy and drawing (art) classes for the Salt Lake Community College to hundreds of students for more than a dozen years. Currently I continue to specialize in colored pencil work of various types doing realistic scenes, people, animals, etc. while emphasizing southern Utah and its landscapes. My wife and I love to stay in Santa Clara at our second home as often as we can. In addition, I teach personal art classes in my home studio and continue with commissioned art for individuals.
