Mary Manning | an Arrowhead Gallery Artist

Open Expressionist

Mary Manning began her artistic adventure in her teens and sketched entertainers on the Las Vegas Strip, as well as painting in oils and pastels the vivid landscapes of Red Rock Canyon and Sunrise Mountain. Her favorite artists are Erin Hanson, an Open Impressionist, Picasso, Georgia O’Keefe, and Monet. She has studied with artists all over the world, including Belgian artist Brody Neuenschwander, who taught mixed media art, including collage. While Mary called herself an Open Impressionist, her latest creative technique puts her into Open Expressionism, which lasted like a firefly on a summer evening in the 20th Century.

Intuition, Mind, Heart

“Open Expressionism allows me to use intense color, gold leaf, painting and collage,” Mary said. No sketch. No reference photo. Intense work. Using oriental or ornamental papers, Mary stains up to a full sheet with inks the night before she works on a piece. Then she tears the dried papers and glues them to a canvas, paper, or other base. As you can see, the paintings are vivid, magic works of art ready for home or office. Mary lives with her husband and two cats in St. George, Utah.
