Patricia Knott | an Arrowhead Gallery Artist
The process of creating is both cathartic and inspiring. I strive for strong composition that balances pattern, color and texture. I find visual comfort incorporating a series of framing devices within my designs, and satisfaction pushing against those boundaries to create an ebb and flow inviting the viewer inside.
My process often begins with a photograph from my camera, from a friend, or from vintage photos. I enhance and alter the image using various filters and editing tools on an ipad. Once the digital composition is ready, it is printed to recycled canvas. Next I begin to add layers over and around the printed image with fabric collage, thread sketching, painting, and traditional sewing and quilting techniques.
The creative process is its own reward. Beginning with a thought inspired by a word, a flower, a pattern, an emotion, a challenge. Mostly something seen, but often something heard. The joy is in the details of construction; sewing a line, threading a needle, dabbing paint, cutting fabric, rearranging elements, learning and utilizing a menagerie of tools and skills to create a visual experience that I imagine.
